Helping Women Now ®

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is a U.S. breast cancer organization that promotes breast cancer awareness and education, provides free screening services, and supports breast cancer patients and survivors.

NBCF was founded by Janelle Hail in 1991 after her own experience with surviving breast cancer, to provide information to breast cancer patients.

The organization focuses heavily on education and early detection.

Why Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is one of the leading health crises for women in the United States

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. There is currently no known cure for breast cancer, and its early diagnosis is critical to survival.

Women who have screening mammograms have a lower chance of dying from breast cancer than women who do not have screening mammograms.

However, many simply cannot afford the cost of screening tests.

These women are at a significantly higher risk of dying from breast cancer if later diagnosed.

Focus Areas

Why are we taking action & What are we doing?

More mammography means more lives saved (15-20% relative reduction in mortality)
Poverty, less education, and a lack of health insurance are associated with lower breast cancer survival rates
Barriers in the complex cancer care system can prevent patients from getting the care they need
Adjusting to the “new normal” of breast cancer survivorship requires hope and tools for coping
